Hi Pete,
I agree with you - good talent is hard to come by.
I've been developing for almost 20 years.
While never claim to be a guru, I definitely do "get" it.
I know that when I was looking for candidates to employ, I faced the same challenges you do - only more so.
In South Africa, there is a strong push in the industry for companies to be considered 'Black Economic Empowered'.
This basically means that a certain percentage of the staff and management must come from the previously disadvantaged groups (typically black or female).
Many of these people are very junior, but due to the demand to reach quotas, they demand titles and salaries that they do not really qualify for.
Of course, once someone has a title, it is difficult, almost impossible, to place them in a lower position.
And forget about a salary cut based on experience etc.

I've recently moved to Australia, and found myself having to prove myself again - my experience etc. in South Africa counts for nothing here.
Fortunately, I am with a company that is willing to take a chance on me - allowing me to come in at a senior position to prove my worth.

Thanx for a fun and informative site.

I think I fall under the "don't get it" junior category. That being said I don't get out of bed for anything under 80 grand.
